Kath and I have just returned from two fabulous days working in and around Stockton on Tees as one of the shortlisted authors nominated for the Stockton Children’s Book of the Year Award.
Helen Wilberforce and her excellent team of librarians greeted us on Monday night at a fab hotel by the side of the Tees Barrage…an interesting location with a whitewater canoe course close by. Along with four other authors we were wined and dined in superb fashion and thankfully all five authors got on famously. The next day, we were taken to various libraries and schools to meet our fans and entertain them with our stories of ourselves and our books – the staff and pupils were very keen and great fans of our spooky stories…not least of all, Scabbajack, the book I had been nominated for.
After meeting up with the other authors over lunch (again, fab hospitality from our Stockton librarian hosts), we visited another school before being taken to the all-important awards ceremony. Awaiting us were fifty chosen children (from 750) who had won prizes for superbly written book reviews…most of which would have put adult writers to shame! Again, we must mention the efforts of the library staff for the excellent displays of authors and children’s work…totally brilliant!
Finally, to the climaxing moment where the Mayor opened the Golden Envelope to reveal the children’s chosen book of the year…and thankfully the Mayor didn’t keep the authors waiting in suspense as long as the presenters of Dancing on Ice, X-factor etc.
‘And the winner is…Scabbajack!
Kath and I nearly fell off our seats with pleasant shock. It was a wonderful moment for us and the icing on the cake to two days being involved in this wonderful event…and in addition, we have four new-found author friends…Di, Harriet, Andrew and Cora. Kath and I wish them every success in their writing careers, and we have to admit…each of their books looked as stunning as our own!!
A MASSIVE thank you to Helen and all of the lovely Stockton library staff and also to our many fans at the schools and colleges inStockton (andYarm) and all surrounding areas. My beautifully engraved crystal decanter now takes pride of place on our display cabinet.

Hi Briony….yes, I loved seeing the Wizard of Oz. It was even more exciting meeting Michael Crawford. I used to love seeing him playing Frank Spencer in the TV series ‘Some Mothers do ‘ave ‘em’.
My favourite part of the Wizard musical was when the storm struck the farm and Dorothy is whirled away to OZ…amazing special effects!
Hi Will…thank you for your lovely comments. I think Scabbajack is very scary too! It frightened me when I was writing it!
Take care
